Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that deals with the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents. The age group of pediatrics includes 0 to 14 yrs. Pediatric Health Care and Nutrition:

Nutrition is the proper maintenance of a well-balanced diet which consists of the essential nutrients and adequate calorie intake required to promote growth and sustain the physiological requirements at various stages of child development. Nutritional needs considerably vary with age, level of activity, and environmental conditions and all of them directly relate to the rate of growth. Generally, an average child expends 55% of energy on metabolic maintenance, 25% on activity, 12% on growth and 8% on excretion.

Inadequate nutrition during the phase of critical growth period results in retarded development or illness, like anemia, scurvy, etc. On the other hand overfeeding in the early childhood years leads to obesity or hypervitaminosis. In all such cases, pediatric nurse plays a key role in educating and giving nutritional guidance for good eating habits.

Childhood Obesity and Diabetes:

Obesity is a significant long-term health problem that is common among children and adolescents in most of the countries. Being overweight or obese (extremely overweight) can contribute to type 2 diabetes in childhood and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in adulthood. Early prevention of obesity prevents the development of serious secondary complications in adulthood. Nurses can help parents and children by providing nutritional advice and, through weight management programs, offer strategies for decreasing caloric intake and increasing physical activity.

Nurses should always take a whole-family approach action because it is challenging for obese children to alter their dietary or physical habits if not supported by their families. They need to work with all the members of the team in addressing childhood obesity as it is a major health with long-term morbidities.
