Nutrition is the proper maintenance of well-balanced diet which consists of the essential nutrients and adequate caloric intake required to promote growth and sustain the physiological requirements at various stages of a child’s development. Nutritional needs considerably vary with age, level of activity, and environmental conditions and all of them directly relate to the rate of growth. Generally, an average child expends 55% of energy on metabolic maintenance, 25% on activity, 12% on growth and 8% on excretion. 

Inadequate nutrition during the phase of critical growth period results in retarded development or illness, like anemia, scurvy etc., On the other hand over feeding in the early childhood years lead to obesity or hypervitaminosis. In all such cases pediatric nurse plays a key role in educating and giving nutritional guidance for good eating habits.

Hematology is a branch of medicine which deals with the blood disorders and its malignancies. A typical hematology nurse must be well trained to provide nursing care for patients with blood disorders and assist the doctor. They also educate patients and their families on how to live and manage their blood disease.

On the other hand, Pediatric Oncology nurses care for people of all ages who are diagnosed with cancer. Being a challenging field nurses support patients, families, and care givers through the stress of diagnosis and treatment, and the anxiety of many uncertainties brought on by the disease, including facing mortality. Every year on an average 300 new cases per 100,000 are registering

Urology is a specialty that focuses on conditions of the urinary tract, including a patient’s bladder, kidney, and urethra. Whereas Nephrologist treats the diseases associated with the kidney. The urology nurse performs urinary health exams, assists the doctor and educates patients about medication and how to maintain and promote urinary health. They also educate patients and family members who have questions and concerns.  Urology and Nephrology nurses should be well versed in educating patients on the risks and complications of the treatment and surgery. They must be familiar with a large variety of conditions, medications, and operations related to kidney.

Gastroenterologists are the expertise in diagnosis and treatment conditions that effect the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and biliary systems. Hepatologists focus mainly on the digestive function of liver.

A gastroenterology nurse primarily treats patients suffering from diseases, disorders, and injuries, of the digestive tract. They assist in examination processes done to the patient. They also educate patients on medications and diet and perform assessments on patients receiving treatment.

Pediatric cardiac nurses offer specialized nursing care of infants, children and adults with cardiac and congenital heart disease. They are highly invested in their role as patient and family educators.

Heart disease was the cause of one in every four deaths killing more than 600,000 people per year. Therefore, cardiac nurses are important in the fight against heart disease and are needed not merely to care for patients, but also to promote healthy life style choices. They play a pivotal role in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of heart disease, heart attacks, and other cardio vascular health issues.

A dental nurse plays an important role in the dental team, helping to ensure that the patient is well cared for. A dental nurse should be friendly, calm and efficient and have a reassuring and welcoming manner. A dental nurse closely assists the dentist throughout a patient’s visit.

About 285 million people are visually impaired worldwide: 39 million are blind and 246 million have low vision Being a pediatric nurse special skills, techniques and training is required to treat children with vision disorders. Pediatric dermatologists treat children with different skin conditions from birth through adolescence. Children are not just small adults. Obesity is a significant long-term health problem that is common among children and adolescents in most of the countries. Being overweight or obese (extremely overweight) can contribute to type 2 diabetes in childhood and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease in adulthood. Early prevention of obesity prevents the development of serious secondary complications in adulthood. Nurses can help parents and children by providing nutritional advice and, through weight management programs, offer strategies for decreasing caloric intake and increasing physical activity.

 Nurses should always take a whole-family approach action because it is challenging for obese children to alter their dietary or physical habits if not supported by their families. They need to work with all the members of the team in addressing childhood obesity as it is a major health with long-term morbidities.

Pediatric surgery is a subspecialty of surgery involving the surgery of infants, children, adolescents and young adults. The pediatric surgical nursing field is clinically broad, making excellence challenging as well as inspiring. Immunology is a branch of medicine which deals with disorders of the immune system. Allergy is one of the most adverse immune reactions faced by people worldwide.

Children are more prone to these allergic reactions. Pediatric immunology and allergy specifically deal with children having such problems. The nurses who deal with such cases should have a detailed knowledge of pediatric allergy conditions and ensure a seamless service for all children and young people with different allergies

Pediatric Emergency Care Nursing is the combination of pediatrics, emergency medicine and nursing. Emergency and critical care nursing is a crucial part of pediatric training given to medical nurses and graduates, so that they can help patients in emergency in the absence of medical practitioner. 90% of global pediatric mortality and critical illness occurs in resource-poor settings. Advancements in early recognition and effective management of critical illness are crucial.

Children are more prone to infectious diseases, because they will be in contact with all the possible things. Proper care must be taken to prevent them from getting infected with a variety of infections. Infectious diseases annually claim about 14 million lives i.e. 25% of the more or less 56 million deaths which are recorded worldwide. The recent trends of pediatrics have achieved exceptional advances in reductions in childhood mortality.

Pediatric nurses should be trained in such a manner that they could analyze situations to anticipate pathophysiological problems and detect change in status. They should be trained in identifying changes in a child’s signs and symptoms and provide supportive care to them and their family

Psychiatric Nurses focuses on the treatment of mental health problems and psychiatric disorders. These nurses should possess significant knowledge in psychological mental health to handle mental illnesses or distress. Children mainly suffer with eating disorders, confusion, dietary problems and self-destructive thoughts. Pediatric nurse should take personal care of such children and help the to come out of it.
