Valencia is situated on the east coast of Spain and is the capital of the autonomous community of Valencia and the third largest city in Spain. Its urban area extends beyond the administrative city limits with a population of around 1.6 million people. The port of Valencia is the 5th busiest container port in Europe. The city is ranked at Beta-global city in the Globalization and the World Cities Research Network.
There are many ancient streets which contain buildings dating to Roman and Arabic times. UNESCO has recognized the silk exchange market (La Llotja de la Seda) erected in the early Valencian city. World-renowned architect Santiago Calatrava produced the futuristic city of arts and sciences which contains an opera performing arts center, a science museum oceanographic park, and other structures such as a long-covered walkway and restaurants. There are many cathedrals and medieval churches squares and gardens which are worth visiting.
